Muskegon, Dec. 1 - (AP) - Death in the roaring surf of storm swept Lake Michigan put an end Friday night to the brief coast guard career of JOHN DIPERT, 23-year-old son of WILLIAM DIPERT, a lighthouse attendant at Point Betsy. DIPERT was lost when heavy seas swamped a coast guard power boat as it made a futile ef- fort to reach the side of the ore freighter, Henry Cort, wrecked and caught fast on the rocky breakwater of Muskegon harbor. It was DIPERT'S first call to life saving duty in a shipwreck. Not being versed by years of service in the rigorous task of battling heavy seas, he was washed from the boat as a heavy wave struck it. The next blow carried the light craft and its occupants shoreward and hurled it into the shallow water of the beach. The surviving occu- pants, CAPT. JOHN BASCH, and surfmen CHARLES BONTEKOE, EDWIN BECKMAN, and ROGER STEERMAN, jumped from the boat and made their way to safety. MR. DIPERT had been a member of Muskegon coast guard since June, 1933. His father, WILLIAM DIPERT, has been in the coast guard service many years. He has also been sta- tioned at Pentwater and Ludington. Although MR. and MRS. DIPERT are at Pt. Betsy, they continue to maintain a home in Pentwater. JACK DIPERT was born March 30, 1911, and grew to manhood in Pentwater, graduating from the local high school in 1929. During his high school career he was one of the outstanding basketball players. Following his graduation he attended Western State Teachers' college at Kalamazoo where he studied business administration. Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Miss ELSIE, a Fremont teacher. MR. and MRS. DIPERT went to Muskegon this morning. ========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ==========================================================================
