Friday, February 28, 1873 VOLUME II, NUMBER 111 Fire At Montague. Early Tuesday morning a fire burst out in the saloon of the Montague House, which soon laid the greater portion of the busi- ness part of the village in ashes. No commmunication could be gained with Muskegon, and they were compelled to telegraph to Pentwater for help. Considerable delay was experienced in getting to the scene of action, and the "Oceana" was chiefly instrumental in preventing the further spread of the flames. The entire Monta- gue House block and the adjacent buildings were destroyed, and the flames leaped across the street, and left the extensive hard- ware store of Messrs. Burrows & Goodno, and the buildings on that side of the street as far as the grist mill, a pile of smoldering ruins. The store of Ferry, Dowling & Co., and the drug store im- mediately opposite, were badly scorched, but not otherwise injured. We are unable to give a full list of those who are losers by the fire, or even a correct estimate of the loss, but it must be very severe. Sooner or later, all our lake shore towns must suffer from the ravages of fire, unless these inflammable buildings of pine are replaced with substantial brick. A few years more and we hope to see this accomplished. ==========================================================================
