CAPTAIN CHARLES BENNETT, who sailed the great lakes for forty-four years and was probably one of the best-known lake captains, died at his home in Lasalle, Monroe county on Monday of last week, aged nearly 91 years. During his career as lake captain he was connected with many enterprises. He carried the strap rail used on the old Adrian railroad between Monroe and Adrian, now the Lake Shore; also the stone used in the locks in Swan creek, near Toledo. In 1844 he made a trip from Ogdensburg, N.Y. to Chicago with a cargo of butter, eggs, apples and oats, on which a profit of over $40,000 was made, more than is now made in three years of navigation. In 1860 he explored Isle Royale, in the Lake Superior district for copper with the schooner Dream of Cleveland, and afterwards sank a shaft that was worth over $100,000. In later years he con- ducted a pleasure resort near Flint, where he was well known for his generosity and sailor oddities. Fifteen years ago he retired to his farm in Lasalle, where he has resided continuously. Three years ago CAPTAIN BENNETT and his sister, who had been separated since infancy, met. They had not seen each other in over seventy years. ========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ==========================================================================
