XII No. 25 - Died, in Victory, Feb. 21, of consumption CHARLES L., son of R. B. and DANA TAYLOR, aged one year and seven months. There were some remarkable circumstances connected with this death which it seems desirable to keep in rememberance. We often say of fruit which falls before the proper season, that it was prematurely ripe; and so there was a precosiousness about this child which indicated unnatural maturity. There was a patience in suffering which is not seen in ordinary children. Although unable to utter articulate words, there was an expression in the eye which was plainly readable. Also, a pointing of the finger toward the upper world, and a clinging grasp of the hand which refused to release its hold until a promise was given by his father and mother that they would try to meet him in the bright land. "Suffer the children," our Saviour said, "To come unto me" ere youth has fled, Reluctantly yield we our cheerful light, Our households' joy, though we knew 'tis right. Sadly we turn to our daily toil; Duty seems hard and our hearts recoil From pleasure and work with small delight, Still we murmer not, for we know 'tis right. "Tis well with the child" our tongues repeat, And we'll faithfully strive our promise to keep To meet him above in that region so bright, Where all are blest, for 'tis surely right. "And a little child shall lead" the throng, With harp and voice, in music and song; May he lead our hearts to that land of light, Till were are able to say, His way is right. ===========================================================================
