ROBERTSON Master of Pere Marquette Carferry Midland Dies Sunday at Local Hospital. All of Ludington felt a deep loss when news spread Sunday and this morning that CAPT. CHARLES E. ROBERTSON, 64, master of Pere Mar- quette carferry City of Midland 41, had died of a heart attack at Paulina Stearns hospital at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. CAPT. ROBERTSON, who bore the title of lieutenant commander in United States Coast Guard Reserve, had sailed on Lake Michigan since he was a young boy. He had been master of a ship since he was 28. For years he sailed the Ann Arbor carferries, joining the Pere Marquette fleet in 1917. When the City of Midland was to be put into operation, there was no question in the minds of Pere Marquette officials who should be mas- ter. CAPT. ROBERTSON, the line's veteran master, was chosen. This was the third carferry CAPT. ROBERTSON had brought out, being in charge of the 21 and 31 when they were put into service. His record of bringing out three carferries was only equaled by that of CAPT. PETER KILTY. Throughout his long period of service, CAPT. ROBERTSON had made many friends - not only of the men who worked with him and of his fellow townsfolk, but also of the thousands and thou- sands who rode the carferries on which he had been master. He was friendly and kinds, always willing to be of service. He was born Aug. 8, 1880, at Glen Haven, Mich. Before coming to Ludington he made his home at Frankfort, the home port of the Ann Arbor line. When he came here to be with the Pere Marquette fleet, he moved his family to Ludington, subsequently building a home at 206 North Lewis street. CAPT. ROBERTSON is survived by his daughter, MRS. PAUL ANDERSON of Ludington; his son, BERNARD A. ROBERTSON, lieutenant, USCGR, also of Ludington; two sisters, MRS. HATTIE PULLMAN of Frankfort and MRS. CHARLES BURNER of Wash- ington, D. C., and his brother, ARTHUR ROBERT- SON of Frankfort. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former MABLE SUTHERLAND, to whom he was married in 1903. He was a member of Crystal lodge No. 270, Free & Accepted Masons, of Frankfort; Ludington chapter No. 92, Royal Arch Masons; Apollo com- mandery No. 31, Knights Templar; Saladin temple, Shriners, of Grand Rapids; Pere Marquette chap- ter No. 327, Order of Eastern Star. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Durrell chapel with the REV. MR. PAUL HASKELL CLARK officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery. The body will remain at Dorrell chapel until the services. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
