HARTWELL CHARLES W. HARTWELL was born at Linden, Vt., Feb. 1, 1835. He served his country during the Civil war, first enlisting in his home state, Vermont, but was forced to re- turn on account of ill health. Shortly after he came to Michigan he re- enlisted, becoming a member of Co. D, Fourth Michigan cavalry. After the war he settled first at Her- sey, Mich., at which place he was mar- ried to Miss SUSAN WINKWORTH on Aug. 2, 1874. MR. HARTWELL came to Mason county 40 years ago, living 35 of these years at Freesoil. He was united with the Re-organized church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Nov. 9, 1893 and remained in the faith until his death on Nov. 5, 1919. He leaves to mourn his loss, five chil- dren, GEORGE NELSON of Montana, BURT, of Germback, Mich., MRS. BUELL SHELLEY, of Elmton, and GEORGE W. and WILLIAM of Freesoil, also many other relatives and friends. His wife proceeded him in death by 12 years. The funeral was held at the Latter Day Saints church in Freesoil, Elder John Schiner officiating. Interment was made in Maple Grove cemetery. With the passing of MR. HARTWELL, who was one of Freesoil's few remain- ing Civil war veterans, their number has decreased by one. Freesoil once boasted of about 30 Civil war veter- ans, but the passing years have taken their toll from their number until now only five remain. These are J. E. STUCK, M. P. ROZELL, FRANK NASH, THEODORE PORTER and HENRY HOWELL. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more information for Mason County, MI by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/mi/mason/ ===========================================================================
