CARLSON Keeper of Life Saving Station Passeds (sic) Away After Long Illness. Friday morning early, the news went abroad over the town that Capt. "Ben" Carlson of the life saving crew had passed away. The dread message was not unexpected, as it had long been known that the captain was suffering with diabetes in a form considered in- curable, but none the less did it bring sorrow and grief to family and friends. CAPT. CARLSON, who celebrated his fifty-second birthday on Dec. 21st, last, was born in Sweden and began his career as a sailor on ocean vessels when very young. In 1888 he entered the govern- ment service as surfman at the Pt. Sauble station. After two years he came to Ludington in the same capacity. As such he served for eleven years when he was transferred to White Lake and was there also for two years. In 1905 he succeeded Capt. Weckler at this station. In the meantime he had served as one of the prize crew who under Capt. Tufts distinguished themselves and won world-wide renown for bravery and efficiency at the World's fair in 1893. During the seven years of service here the captain has had occasion to lend aid upon many occasions and distinguished him- self and his crew by a record for bravery and efficiency. He was presented with a valuable watch by the Pere Marquette railroad company in recognition of services rendered in aid of the "17" when she was on the beach. The immediate relatives surviving deceased are the wife and four children, three daughters, ELLEN, ELIZABETH and CLARA, and one son, ALBERT. CAPT. CARSLON was a member of the Swedish Aid society, the Masons, the Maccabees and the Modern Romans, and in these orders as well as in a large circle of friends outside he will be missed and sincerely mourned. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, from the Swedish Lutheran church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Bennager. The Swedish Aid society attended in a body and the Masonic and other fraternities were represented at the services. Many beautiful floral offerings bore testimony to the high esteem in which the departed was held and the very sincere sympathy felt for the sorrowing family. Among other of such floral tributes was a handsome piece sent by the division superintendent. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
