New Series No. 39 Thursday, February 14, 1884 The fine residence of Mr. WM. HEYSOTT, situated just outside the city limits on the east and west state road, was entirely destroyed by fire last Monday night, to- gether with a portion of the household goods. The cause of the fire was a defective chimney, the lower portion of which had settled away from the joists over-head, leaving an opening through which the flames were com- municated to the woodwork of the building. Mr. CAMPBELL, who lives next adjoining, was the first to discover the fire and gave the alarm to the occupants of the building, who were soundly sleeping at the time. The fire burned slowly, but there being no water at hand it was soon beyond control. Night watchman McLAUGHLIN sounded the alarm in the city and a team was hitched to the hose cart but it being learned that the fire was beyond the reach of water, the team was sent to the barn. The loss on the building is estimated at $2,500, with an insur- ance of $2000, of which $1000 was with GEO. P. McMAHON and $1000 of O. J. GRAVES. Loss on furniture $800, with an insurance of $2000 - $500 with GEO. P. McMAHON and $1500 with O. J. GRAVES. ==========================================================================
