New Series No. 38 Thursday, February 7, 1884 On Tuesday afternoon about two o'clock Arbeiter Hall was discovered to be on fire; the alarm was given and the fire companies appeared on the scene as promptly as possible. The fire appeared to be between the ceil- ing and the roof and could not be held in check. The building was entirely destroyed. Being a brick veneered building, the flames had free play between the outer and inner walls, where it was impossible to reach it. The frequent falling of portions of the walls at dif- ferent points in the frame work was destroyed warned the boys to stand back at a safe distance. It was a serious loss to the German Aid Society. The building, furniture, and scenery cost about $8,000 and was in- sured for $4,000. The hall had just been kalsomined and was in nice order for the giving of public enter- tainments. As the society was about $4,000 in debt, the destruction of their hall leaves them ashes for their time and care, besides the $4,000 invested over and above the insurance. The society exhibit commendable pluck in the matter and talk of building again. The site or size of the new hall has not of course yet been determined on. ==========================================================================
