        LUKE A. SMITH was born in Canada in 1843.  When eleven years
     of age he came to the States, and in 1870 went to Missouri and
     engaged in the hardware business.  In 1880 his attention having
     been directed to Ludington, he came here and purchased a build-
     ing in the Fourth Ward, at the corner of Washington Avenue and
     Second Street, and opened a new hardware store.  Mr. SMITH is a
     careful and thorough business man, and has always succeeded.
