H. Elsworth When he who is now L. P. SMEDBERG of Amber township was 14 years of age he enlisted as a drummer boy in the Swedish army. His father's name was JOHN and according to custom his name should have been JOHNSON, but as the army regulations did not permit of there being two men in any one company with the same name, and there was already a JOHNSON, the drummer boy was obliged to choose a new name. Then it was that he became SMEDBERG. He took this name becaus he had once known a lawyer, a fine fellow, who bore the name, and he hoped to be equally fine. For four years he beat the drum, then retired, but shortly after entered the army again and served the king for ten years more. ===========================================================================
