H. Elsworth Years ago when JOSEPH SCOTT of Riverton was just beginning to develop a home he was one of the hardest working men in the county. He paid down $50 on the west forty of his present eighty acre farm, then began making a farm for himself and wife. The first day he peel- ed bark one day, hauled it to town the next, bringing back a load of lumber for his house. In this way he got built a shelter from the winter storms. The house was erected over a big hemlock stump, the same serving as a foundation for the chimney for years. One winter MR. SCOTT did some extra energetic work logging. He had a yoke of five-year-old steers and with these he did two day's work every 24 hours. He arose at three o'clock in the morning, got his logs skidded before breakfast and then was the first man to the river bank with his load. Four trips were made each day, after which MR. SCOTT went to the woods and cut down enough trees before supper to make up his four loads for the following day. After supper the fallen trees were sawed into the proper lengths. This accomplished, MR. SCOTT considered his day's work done. Much of the time it was nearly midnight before he was able to retire. ===========================================================================
