Having disposed of his produce for cash, he started for home about two o'clock. When at the foot of the Stappleton hill, two miles this side of Port Hope, Mr. VAUGHN was accosted by a person coming out of the woods whom he took for a negro, and who asked for a ride. VAUGHN stopped team and invited him to get in. The stranger placed one foot upon the wagon hub, and, as Mr. V's attention was called away, he seized him and threw him from the wagon out upon the frozen ground; at the same time demanding his money. At this stage of the proceed- ings a team appeared coming up the road and the would be high- way robber broke for the woods leaving his intended victim on the ground with his head and face badly bruised and scratched. The efforts made to follow the robber were unavailing. Mr. VAUGHN now thinks his assailant was a white man in disguise, and evidently he was acquainted with the fact of his possession of considerable money. The boldness of this attempt will be appreciated when the fact is known that it was made on one of the most frequented roads in this county, about three o'clock in the afternoon. ==========================================================================
