In making the announcement, commanding officers said the vessels had not been damaged as much as had been feared. Most was confined to broken ribs and loosened planking. Temporary repairs are now being made, and the vessels are expected to be in shape for the crossing Friday, they said. In addition to repairs, one of the big jobs Wednesday was removal of ice that encrusted the seven ships from stem to stern. The craft have been in port over a week. ===========================================================================
