"It was the worst storm on the lake that I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty of them." said the craft's commander, Elmer Dudley, boatswain's mate first class, a veteran of 16 years in the guard. The boat put in at the Old Chicago coast guard station for refueling and chipping off ice that encrusted the vessel. Dudley said the crew, Kenneth Cortwright, Jesse Meeker and Alvin Jones, were uninjured although bruised and chilled. The run across the lake from South Haven to Chicago requires from four to five hours in good weather. The lifeboat powered by gasoline motor, spent three hours cruising north from South Haven in search of fishing tug. Then, Dudley said, the guardsmen headed west for the center of the lake to see if the tugs possibly were in trouble farther out. He said "the lifeboat's customary speed was seven to eight knots but the rough water forced them to proceed at half speed. When they docked here, they had used 180 of the 200 gallon supply aboard. ===========================================================================
