C. Woodruff OTHER NAME(s): - OFFICIAL NO: 14609 DATE OF LOSS: 1 November 1878 CAUSE OF LOSS: Ashore LOCATION: Lake Michigan, 1/2 mile n. of the piers at White Lake RIG TYPE: Bark, 3 masts HULL TYPE: Wood BUILDER: F. N. Jones, Buffalo, NY - 1866 OWNER(S): Thomas Murphy, Cleveland MASTER: Capt. James Lingham, Cleveland TONNAGE: 548.9 gt DIMENSIONS: 170 x 33 x 13 CASUALTIES: 3 of 10 The L. C. WOODRUFF was bound from Chicago to Buffalo with a cargo of corn, and was near Milwaukee, when she ran into foul weather which quickly turned into a furious gale. Running, or being blown before it, the WOODRUFF came to anchor on the other side of the lake at the entrance to White Lake, MI. She slowly dragged toward the shore and struck bottom several hundred yards from the White River Light Station. There her anchor chain parted and she was blown about 1/2 mile further north and struck 150 yards from shore where the wind and waves ended her days. In 1942, and again in 1974, the skeletal remains of a schooner appeared near the White Lake channel which were thought to be those of the L. C. WOODRUFF. In December, 2018, the old bones made another appearance. This time researchers from the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association were able to investigate and determined that the remains were likely that of the smaller schooner CONTEST than the WOODRUFF. ======================================================================== Sources: Merchant Vessel List - 1874 Buffalo Daily Courier - 28 March 1866 Detroit Free Press - 2 November 1878 Annual Report of the U.S.L.S.S. 1879 WZZM TV 13 News, 13 December 2018
