DIMENSIONS: 200 x 28 x 12 CASUALTIES: 17 of 34 The WESTMORELAND was bound for Mackinac Island with with supplies which included, but not limited to, oats, flour, butter, wool, lard, beef and high-wine, when she ran into a northwest gale. She began taking on water when off Little Point Sable. Capt. Clark endeavored to make the safety of South Manitou harbor but, when opposite Platte River by, the rising water put out the fire in her boilers. Left at the mercy of the storm WESTMORELAND began sinking by the stern and drifting south through the Manitou Passage. Capt. Clark ordered everyone to the boats but part of the crew, who it is rumored had partaken too greatly of the high-wine, refused the command and were lost. Rumors have long existed of lost gold and whiskey however dives to the wreck have found nothing of the kind.
