Harrington, Erie, PA MASTER: Capt. James F. Purdy, Erie, PA TONNAGE: 111.98 gt, 83.28 nt DIMENSIONS: 83.8 x 16.8 x 5.2 CASUALTIES: 8 (all) SILVER SPRAY went down with all hands during a gale that swept the lakes. She was raised the following June and towed up the river to the docks at Great Lakes Towing Co. where it was to be examined to ascertain if she could be repaired and put back into commission as a fishing tug. No further mention of her is found in Merchant Vessel Lists. This tiny little fishing tug almost caused an inter- national incident in 1903 when it was thought she was fish poaching in Canadian waters. Pursued, and fired upon, by the Canadian revenue cutter PETREL, the "unterrified fish pirate" arrived in port at Erie, PA., riddled with bullets. Shortly aferward, as she lay in drydock at the Empire Shipbuilding Co., she caught caught fire and burned. Imagine that. Later rebuilt. ======================================================================== Sources: Merchant Vessel List - 1896, 1904, 1909, 1910 (last year found) Buffalo Courier - 5 June 1911 Syracuse Journal - 26 October 1903 Buffalo Evening News - 26 October 1903
