DEPTH: 19.33 ft CASUALTIES: 2* SURVIVORS: THE SHENANGO NO. 1 IS LOST BY FIRE ---------------------- The big Carferry Burns while Fast in the Ice off the Conneaut, Ohio, Breakwater. ----------- On Friday the Shenango No. 1, a sister ship of the Pere Marquette car- ferry 16; which was formerly Shen- ango No. 2, was consumed by fire while held in the ice off Con- neaut, Ohio, breakwater. Charles McCarter, a fireman, was burned to death, and Engineer John Morrell was probably fatally burned while trying to rescue McCarter. The rest of the crew escaped. The vessel was valued at about $350,000. She was 282-1/2 feet long 53 feet wide and carried 26 cars, and was of 2,200 horse power. She was built in 1895 at Toledo. The steamer was the property of the Mar- quette and Bessemer Dock and Navi- gation company. The steamer's route was between Conneaut and Rondeau, Ont. She con- nected with the Pere Marquette rail- way.
