CASUALTIES: 0 SURVIVORS: 8 The PORTCH, running light from Chicago to Rowley Bay for a cargo of railroad ties, was run down by the propeller LELAND when about midway between Manitowoc and Sheboygan during a dense fog. The port bow of the PORTCH was broken in down to the water line. As the PORTCH was not taking on water rapidly at that point she was taken in tow by the LELAND who attempted to take her to Manitowoc but, the wind shifting and blowing up a gale, course was changed for Sheboygan. The PORTCH was unable to get over the bar and into the harbor as she had taken in so much water and had settled too deeply. The increasing gale blew the wounded PORTCH on shore where she sunk in twelve feet of water and broke up. ======================================================================== Sources: Merchant Vessel List, 1879 Toronto Daily Mail, 1 April 1882 Annual Report of the U.S.L.S.S - 1882, pp. 195 The Marine Record, 13 September 1883 Federal Reporter, Vol. 20, May-August 1884 - pp. 918 Federal Reporter, Vol. 19, February-May 1884 - pp. 771-781 Last updated 9 December 2014
