TUTTLE, both ore laden, when stiff northwest winds turned into a gale. The TUTTLE, unable to make any head- way, was being driven towards the shore. To save their own craft the towline was cut and the JOSEPH PAIGE, unable to work her way off a lee shore, struck ground off Vermilion Point. Crew taken off by the combined efforts of the lifesaving crews and Vermillion Point and Crisps Point. The cook, and wife of the captain, was so shaken by the incident, that she refused to work on the lakes again. She also cited it as one of the reasons that she "took up with" a landlubber named John Henry Smith at Buffalo. The two were married but it seems she neglected to divorce Capt. Rose before hand!
