W. Loutit, Grand Haven, MI - 1874 OWNER(S): Roper Lumber Co. & Capt. Claus Weborg MASTER: Capt. Claus Weborg TONNAGE: 163.29 gt, 155.13 nt DIMENSIONS: 113 x 25 x 7.5 CASUALTIES: 5 (all) The OTTAWA was lumber laden and bound from Manistique to Chicago when she was caught up in a heavy southeaster and stranded. The crew took to her yawl boat, which was powered by a 6 h.p. gasoline engine, but it was no match for the heavy seas still rolling and the entire crew was lost to the icy waters. The OTTAWA did not go to pieces in the storm, and if the crew had remained aboard they would quite likely have all survived. Attempts to pump her out failed and her cargo was loaded aboard the schooner MARY ELLEN COOK and taken to Chicago. She had just been fitted out in Chicago and this was her first, and final, run of the season. She was the first vessel on the lakes to adopt wire rigging. The crew: Claus Weborg, Capt. - age 32 Peter Buset, mate - age 35 Frank Vanefin - age 29 Carl Nyquist - age 20 Victor Nordene - age 22 All except Buset were from Marinette, WI ======================================================================== Sources: Port Huron Daily Times - 11 June 1874 R.
