Elphicke MASTER: TONNAGE: 1101,81 gt, 850.82 nt DIMENSIONS: 202.2 x 35 x 18.5 CASUALTIES: When enrolled at Sandusky, OH., in 1875, she was the first four-masted vessel sailing the Great Lakes. OHIO was sunk as a result of collision with schooner barge IRONTON. The impact cut the OHIO to the water's edge abreast of the boiler house and she went down quickly. Her crew of 16 took to the boats and were picked up by the schooner-barge MOONLIGHT, which had been in tow of the steamer C. J. KERSHAW. The IRONTON had also been in tow of the same steamer when the steamer's engines broke down and the tow line was cast off. Loaded with flour and feed from Duluth to Ogdensburg at the time. In 1887 the OHIO was crushed between the steamers MATHER and SIBERIA off the Soo river. Insurance paid a loss of $60,000 and another $20,000 to get the wreck afload.
