                   The NIKO was overtaken by a storm while off Garden
                 Island with barge C. E. REDFERN in tow. She tried to
                 shelter behind the island but, in the gale, she broke
                 loose from her moorings and struck a reef. The crew gained
                 the roof of the pilothouse where they waited until day-
                 light before striking out on a raft to the REDFERN.

                   Major repairs at Chicago in 1898. 118 feet of keel,
                 thirty-seven bottom planks, ten main deck beams and
                 deck, hatch coamings, stanchions, bulwarks, covering
                 board and rail all around, general repairs and calking.
