FOLSOM was bound for Lake Linden with the schooner-barges MARY B. MITCHELL and NELSON, loaded with coal, in tow when the NELSON broke her towline in a gale and sunk. The only survivor was Capt. Andrew Hagney who floated ashore on the cabin roof. Among the victims of the disaster were Capt. Hagney's wife and infant son.
