TONNAGE: 777.10 gt, 738.50 nt DIMENSIONS: 194 x 34.5 x 14 CASUALTIES: 7 MIZTEC amd PESHTIGO were up-bound from Buffalo to Superior, WI., in tow of the propeller ZILLAH when Lake Superior unleashed a savage storm and caught the trio. In less than an hour they would have reached the safety of Whitefish Point. Instead, as one witness told it, "the lights of the MIZTEC suddenly vanished into the sea; it appeared that she simply went to pieces, our line to her was snapped and we were adrift in the inky darkness and with the snow so dense that there was no knowing our location." The ZILLAH barely made it to shelter under Whitefish Point with her boiler rooms knee deep in water. PESTIGO with her rudder smashed, let go two anchors and rode the storm until Sunday morning when ZILLAH went out from behind Whitefish and picked her up.
