                   The steamer KALKASKA left Duluth with the ALOHA,
                J. H. MEAD and MEDIATOR in tow and went ashore in a
                storm above Portage Lake canal.  The KALKASKA was only
                able to free herself and the ALOHA.  The MEAD and MEDIATOR
                were both lightered and gotten off several days later.  The
                MEDIATOR was towed to Houghton but was abandoned there and
                became a total loss.
