Nason Bernard (d) TONNAGE: 1,263 gt DIMENSIONS: 230 x 37.2 x 15.3 CASUALTIES: 11 SURVIVORS: 9 Bound from Lorain, Ohio, to Port Arthur with 1,800 tons of coal when she was caught in a heavy gale. When nearing Portage Entry her power plant became disabled and left her at the mercy of the storm. The coast guard crew from Portage Entry manuevered their power surf boat alongside the MAPLEHURST numerous times to take off those who were brave enough to make the leap from the listing steamer into the storm tossed surf boat. Ten men would make the jump, one missing the surf boat and being lost. MAPLEHURST struck hard upon the west breakwater and broken up by the crashing waves.
