LEUTY was bound from Cleveland, OH., to Pequaming, MI., when overtaken by a heavy snowstorm off Marquette. While running for a safe harbor she brought up hard on a reef some 1,000 feet offshore. The lifesavers engaged two tugs, the MAXWELL and the HOFFNUNG, to free the vessel but the LEUTY was stuck fast, the tugs were too small for the job, and the seas were too wild. The lifesavers made two trips to take off the captain and crew of 13, including one woman. ======================================================================== Sources: R. L.
