Charles Lamont - 1879 OWNER(S): Same MASTER: Same TONNAGE: 14 gt DIMENSIONS: 45 x 10 x 4 CASUALTIES: 3 (all) Capsized in a storm while racing another local tug, the GEM, from Pentwater to Ludington and back. The GEM lost sight of the LAMONT in the snow and heavy seas when about four miles out from Pentwater, the captain assuming the smaller vessel had turned back. The GEM made the completed the trip to Ludington and back to Pentwater where it was learned the LAMONT had not returned. A search party set out on horseback and returned with the news that the LAMONT had capsized and been wrecked about three miles north of Pentwater. The wager on the race was $25. The cost was the lives of Capt. Charles Lamont, his 12-year- old son Georgie, and fireman Palmer Hill. Forty-six year old Capt. Charles Lamont left a widow, Harriet A., and five children behind.
