Last seen at about 10 a.m. by the JOHN M. NICOL with a heavy list to starboard and her crew clinging to the port rail. The HUDSON was flying her distress signals but the NICOL did not stop to render assistance, being in a leaking condition herself. In July, 1902, a note in a bottle was picked up by Tom Garrity, keeper of the Presque Isle light-house, which read "Steamer HUDSON, off Keewenaw Point, rolling like a ball, and all hands ready to give up the boat.
