                   Downbound with 6,000 bushels of wheat when she grounded 
                 on Spectacle Reef. Half of her cargo was thrown overboard
                 in an attempt to get her off to no avail. Efforts to pump
                 her out were unsuccessful and she was abandoned abt. the
                 17th of August. In September the schooner Montezuma re-
                 ported that the Kate Hayes had worked her way off the rocks
                 and was floating about in the lake.
