Originally 208 feet. she was lengthened, and her hold depth increased in early 1881 at a cost of about $8,000. Her unique design would be the standard for lake freighters for the next 100 years. Carrying 1,400 tons of coal for Marinette, WI., when fire broke out in the boiler room. Capt. McCallum ran her onto Whaleback Shoal and the crew took to the life- boats. They were picked up by the fishing tug STEWART EDWARD.
