GILBERT was upbound with coal for Green Bay, WI., when the larger CALDERA of the Croxton STeamship Co., downbound light, loomed out of the dense fog and struck the GILBERT amidships, cutting her nearly in two. Twenty- three men scrambled for the CALDERA as the W. H. GILBERT rapidly went to the bottom. Engineer Butlin insisted on remaining at the pumps for as long as possible and finally had to be ordered away by Capt.
