GARDNER was one of the oldest vessels on the lakes when she caught fire on Lake Huron while in tow of the propeller D. LEUTY. The propeller quickly turned and came alongside the GARDNER. Both crews fought the flames until it became obvious that they could not save the burning vessel. She settled to the bottom with her spars sticking above the water and directly in the course of lake vessels. Being a dangersous obstruction to lake traffic she was moved to deeper water before the end of the month. Built as a Brig. Ran on a bar at Chicago in Dec., 1855. Scuttled. Raised and repaired. 1866 - Rebuilt, converted to a bark. 1872 - Rig changed to schooner. 1879 - Hard ashore at Point Abino. Thought to be a total wreck. Rebuilt.
