J. Boland (at loss) MASTER: ? TONNAGE: 351 gt, 276 nt DIMENSIONS: 133.4 x 26 x 11.8 CASUALTIES: None Built as a passenger steamer for Northern Transportation Line. Purchased by Philo Chamberlain at auction in 1876 for $18,500 when the NT boats were sold off to satisfy creditors. January, 1880, stove a hole in her bow at Ludington while attempting to break through ten inches of ice. Purchased by Folger & Copley of Chaumont in January 1881 to be used in towing a fleet of barges. Rebuilt as a lumber carrier. Winter 1884-'85 - recaulked & boilers overhauled at Detroit May 2, 1885, left Alpena with 6 barges in tow, the total cargo being 2,186,000 feet of lumber. November, 1887 - On the rocks near Black River. Damaged wheel. Towed to Detroit for repair. 1888 (fall) - Fire, forward cabin damaged. 1890 - Rebuild at Alpena July, 1892 - In dry dock at Detroit to repair damaged stern bearings. June, 1897 - Caught fire at the dock at Alpena. Upper works burned off. Damage about $3,000, no insurance. October 10, 1902 - Had delivered Lake Superior lumber at Bay City and started to Saginaw for lay up when fire was discovered in her stern. It spread so quickly that there was no hope of saving her.
