John Mattison, Muskegon, MI TONNAGE: 357 gt DIMENSIONS: 156.6 x 30 x 10 CASUALTIES: 6 of 7 D. L. FILER and INTERLAKEN were in tow of the propeller TEMPEST, bound Buffalo to Saugatuck, MI., when overtaken by the storm. TEMPEST left the FILER at anchor and proceeded to Toledo. reportedly for another tow. The FILER dragged her anchor six miles in the storm before foundering. One survivor, Capt. John Mattison, was plucked from the rigging by the passing steamer WESTERN STATES moments before the FILER sank. 25 October 1898 - D. L. FILER and towmate, DELTA, caught in a storm off Port Washington and broke loose from their tow, L. PAHLOW. Crew (7 in all) rescued by the Racine life- saving crew and the tug DIXON after clinging to the rigging for 24 hours. Later towed to Chicago. Capt. Horace Acres. Built as a barge. Rebuilt as a schooner in 1881 Named for Delos L.
