TONNAGE: 400.68 gt, 380.65 nt DIMENSIONS: 165.2 x 30 x 11 CASUALTIES: 1 of 8 The steamer P. H. BIRKHEAD was downbound from Baraga, MI. to Tonawanda with the barges ELMA and Chester B. JONES in tow when they were overwhelmed by a heavy gale. Her tow line parted and the ELMA struck at Miner's Castle. Except for the loss of one man, Clemens, everyone aboard finally managed to reach land and climbed to a rocky ledge seventy-five feet above the water where they were found by lighthouse keepers.
