Barker OTHER NAME(s): - OFFICIAL NO: 9165 DATE OF LOSS: 22 September 1887 CAUSE OF LOSS: Stranded LOCATION: Lake Michigan, Spider Island RIG TYPE: Schooner HULL TYPE: Wood BUILDER: S. Johnson*, Clayton, N.Y. - 1867 OWNER(S): Wilford MASTER: ? TONNAGE: 304.77 gt DIMENSIONS: 137 x 26 x 12 CASUALTIES: none mentioned Early reports that speculated the stranded BARKER could be easily released were proven wrong when the tugs NELSON, SPAULDING and EVENSON, all pulling together, failed to free the schooner in the latter part of October. Later reports claimed, in error, that she had been released. In fact heavy seas had thrown her onto another part of the reef and left her lying on her beam ends with her cabin and all her after part gone. It was decided that she was worth no further effort. *One source says built by John Cantwell at Clayton. ======================================================================== Sources: Merchant Vessel List - 1869, 1871, 1874, 1878, 1881, Polks Marine Directory - 1884 Buffalo Courier - 13 October 1888 Door County Advocate - 29 October 1888 Marine Record - 15 November 1888 Childs Gazetteer of Jefferson County, N.Y. - 1890
