At the time of her launch she was hailed as the largest wooden vessel on the lakes. On November 29, 1889, the powerful steamer had the schooner GEORGE W. ADAMS and the big five-masted schooner DAVID DOWS in tow when the trio was overtaken by a terrific storm. The DOWS and ADAMS were cast off. The ADAMS survived but the DOWS went to the bottom. On December 12, 1898, the AURORA caught fire off Bois Blanc Island at the entrance to the Detroit river and burned to the water's edge. Originally thought to be a total loss but was raised and converted into a tow-barge. Changed hands several times afterwards. Owned by the Morton Salt Company in 1916 and laid up in 1927. Left to rot in shallow water on the north side of Harbor Island. ======================================================================== Sources: Marine Record, 25 August 1887 Certificate of Enrollment, 26 September 1887 Marine Record, 15 December 1898 Marine Record, 22 December 1898 Merchant Vessel List - 1889 Chicago Tribune, 30 November 1889 Shipwreck World - 11 December 2012
