Atkinson OTHER NAME(s): Ann Arbor No. 6 (renamed in 1959) OFFICIAL NO: 214656 DATE OF LOSS: 2012 CAUSE OF LOSS: Scrapped - MCM Marine and Reid Metals LOCATION: Sault Ste. Marie RIG TYPE: Carferry, propeller HULL TYPE: Steel BUILDER: Great Lakes Engineering, Ecorse - 1917 OWNER(S): ? MASTER: - TONNAGE: 2,757 gt DIMENSIONS: 350 x 56 x 18.25 CASUALTIES: 0 Major rebuild in 1959. Hull lengthened from 338 to 372 feet, increasing her tonnage to 3,241 gt, her steam engines were replaced with Nordberg 5,000 hp twin diesel engines, and a new streamlined pilothouse was added at Manitowoc Shipbuilding. Laid up with a broken crankshaft in her port engine from 1973 - 1979. Withdrawn from service in October, 1981 an sold to Peterson Builders, Inc., in 1984. Grand plans for her didn't develop and she was layed up at Kewaunee until 1994 when she was sold to Contessa Cruise Lines and moored "temporarily" at Ludington until 2003, during which time she changed hands a few times, when she landed in the hands of Scotlund Stivers who planned to have her converted to a luxury yacht. Towed out of Ludington bound for St. Ignace on November 26, 2003 but, again, grand plans for her didn't pan out. The ATKINSON contained large quantities of asbestos and even attempts to give her away failed, as did the idea of sinking her as a recreational dive site. Finally scrapped at Sault Ste. Marie by MCM Marine and Reid Metals in 2012. ======================================================================== Sources: Associated Press (newspaper article), 23 December 2011 Brown, Grant "Ninety Years Crossing Lake Michigan" - 2008 The Milwaukee Sentinel, 4 April 1958 Ludington Daily News, 4 April 2001
