CASUALTIES: 10-12 (all, most sources say 11) SURVIVORS: 0 Left Marquette, MI., on 4 November 1869 loaded with 550 tons of iron ore for Cleveland and was overtaken by a severe northwest gale that ripped her to pieces. There was no immediate concern for her safety as she was only six years old, had an experienced captain and crew and was considered to be a sturdy vessel. Marine men felt that she had likely tucked in somewhere for shelter but, as the days turned into weeks, it became painfully obvious that she and her crew had become victims of the storm. It wasn't until December 9th that the bodies and wreckage of the schooner were discovered near the mouth of Two Heart River. The storm had been so severe that wreckage and her smashed yawl was found thrown high up on the forty foot sand banks. ======================================================================== Sources: Boyer "Ships and Men of the Great Lakes," 1977, p. 31 Swayze "Shipwreck!," - 1992 Stonehouse "November: The Cruelest Month," - 2010 Bohnak "So Cold a Sky," - p. 292 Great Lakes Maritime Database - University of Michigan Telescope, Vol. 8 - 1959 House Documents, Vol. 265, 1870 - p. 34 Beardsley "Genealogical History of the Beardsley Family in America," - 1902 Merchant Vessel List - 1869 Last updated 27 July 2014
