                   Lumber laden from Duluth*  to Chicago with her consort,
                JAMES MOWATT, in tow when fire started in the deck load
                forward. Crew were taken off by the MOWATT. Attempts to tow
                the ARNOLD failed because of the intense heat and she was
                left adrift until she fetched up on the bottom near Salmon
                Trout River where the fire burned itself out.
