A. Turner, Trenton, MI - 1871 OWNER(S): Leathem & Smith MASTER: Capt. Purdy TONNAGE: 366.93 gt* DIMENSIONS: 139 x 28.58 x 11.42* CASUALTIES: 0 of 5 The ADVANCE had been removing coal from the steamer FRANK BILLINGS when a strong northwest wind rose up. The ADVANCE was made fast alongside the 444 foot steamer. The old wooden hull of the ADVANCE banged against the BILLINGS' steel hull in the surging seas, opening her seams and causing her to take on water. Having no power of her own, and beginning to sink, Capt. Purdy thought it best to cut the lines and drift before the wind to the nearest beach about a mile distant. With a heavy sea running, and two large derricks atop, the ADVANCE rolled down until her decks would go under. The Canal Coast Guard crew, Capt. Christensen in command, safely took the 5 man crew off the ADVANCE before she struck. Not recovered nor re- paired, likely due to age and condition, the ADVANCE was abandoned the following year. *Rig changed to a barge at Milwaukee in 1911. 438 gt - ======================================================================== Sources: Merchant Vessel List - 1874, 1911 Door County Advocate - 21 October 1921 Door County Advocate - 17 March 1964
