Muns Paulson, Chicago MASTER: Same TONNAGE: 179.92 gt DIMENSIONS: 117.3 x 25.7 x 8.9 CASUALTIES: 6 of 7 Bound from Ahnapee to Chicago with a cargo of tan bark when she sprung a leak in heavy seas and, against the wishes of the crew, dropped anchor off Oostburg, WI. As the wind freshened and the sea raised more of Lake Michigan filled her hold. The deck load was thrown over- board but, as a heavy rain squall set in, rolled over on her starboard side. The crew hastily jumped into the yawl boat and made for shore using a bed quilt for a sail. When about 200 feet from shore the boat filled with water and left the occupants with no choice but to swim for their lives, only one (Jacob Raum/Ramm) making it to shore alive. Muns Paulson was 49 years old and left a widow (Martha) and at least 6 living children to mourn his loss. The captain and family, in 1880, resided at 181 West Erie Street, 14th Ward, Chicago, IL. News articles report that his son George was 23 years of age.
