Baker, Oswego - 1856 OWNER(S): MASTER: TONNAGE: 264 gt LENGTH: 137 ft BEAM: 26 ft DEPTH: 11 ft CASUALTIES: 0 SURVIVORS: not stated While under tow of the steam-barge ELFINMERE, bound Cheboygan for Toledo with lumber, encountered a strong northeast gale accompanied by blinding snow and heavy seas. The steamer put hard to starboard with the intention of heading the tow into the wind but ran too close to the shoreline and the tow line was either cut or parted. The ACONTIAS and another tow, the schooner A. H. MOSS, went ashore and became a total loss. The Admiralty court held that the ELFINMERE was at fault for not keeping further out into the lake. *Note: Merchant vessel lists say she was built at Detroit in 1866 but this was a rebuild. She is found in newpaper accounts dating from 1856. ======================================================================== Sources: Finn, "Old Shipping Days in Oswego," - 1972 The Federal Reporter, vol. 39, p. 909 - 911 Dist.
