                             The Savings Plan
             
             Increased advantage of the plan for saving money
          was taken by the sailors during the past season, and the
          number of depositors, the gross amount deposited, and
          the balance at the end of the season showed such increase
          as to warrant the conclusion that there was a real need
          of such convenience.
             A number of officers and men whose lives were lost in
          the November disasters were depositors through the
          savings plan, and the balances which some had on
          deposit were evidences of the benefits which the plan
          afforded to the men and will be of material assistance to
          the bereft families.
