Marie opened for traffic April 18th, and closed December 18th, a seaons of 245 days. The Canadian Canal was opened April 14, and closed December 15, a season of 246 days. The ice conditions in St. Mary's River and White- fish Bay prevented the passage of vessels until April 24th, by which time approximately 125 vessels bound in either direction had arrived above or below the Sault and awaited the forcing of a channel through the ice. The Steamer St. Ignace worked for many days in efforts to effect and opening, and much damage to the vessels resulted from their attempts to force the passage. Prac- tically all vessels were in commission by April 30th. Navigation of the Welland Canal opened April 15th. ---------------------------------------------------------- Page 31 The first boat left Buffalo April 14th, encountering much difficulty with the ice before reaching open water. The lightship was placed on her station at Southeast Shoal April 18th, and remained until December 16. The lights at Bar Point were placed in position April 16th. Storm warnings were resumed April 15th, and discon- tinued December 10th. ===========================================================================
