M. WRIGHT, of Sarnia, Long in Service of Northern Navigation Co. (Special to The Free Press) Sarnia, Ont., Aug. 8. - Marine circles lost a prominent figure by the death to- day of CAPTAIN ALFRED M. WRIGHT, which occurred at his residence, 200 Cromwell street. Born in Collingwood 58 years ago he commenced his career as a sailor when but a boy, and had occupied every posi- tion from cabin boy to master. He had been associated with the Northern Navi- gation company practically all his life, and two months ago sailed his last ship, the Valcartier, into Collingwood, where he was forced to resign active command owing to illness. In 1882 he commenced sailing between Collingwood and Sault Ste. Marie at the age of 11 years. The first steamer of which he was mas- er was the Britannic, which he sailed in 1902. In the following year he was in charge of the Atlantic, and in 1904 the City of Midland. The Collingwood was his next command in 1905, and for the next three years he had charge of the Majestic. From 1909 to 1911 he sailed on the Saronic. In 1913, the year of the Great Lakes storm, when many boats foundered, CAPTAIN WRIGHT left Port Arthur in the storm and brought the Saronic safely into port, an achieve- ment that is recognized as one of the greatest in the history of the Great Lakes. In the following year he was given com- mand of the Huronic, which he captained for five years, later going to the Hamonic and the Noronic. CAPTAIN WRIGHT was chosen commodore of the fleet while commander of the Noronic. =========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ===========================================================================
