JAMES REID The death of CAPTAIN JAMES REID removes a figure prominent in marine circles and known from one end of the lakes to the other because of his absolute determination and unbounded energy. As a wrecker, in the generally accepted use of the word among vesselmen, CAPTAIN REID had no equal. No job was too big or too difficult for him to tackle and some of the wrecking feats successfully performed by him were con- sidered simply marvelous. He "knew no such word as fail" and failure seldom followed his efforts. Although laid low at various times by the illness which finally resulted in his death, he fought with that same grim will power which marked his career as a boat wrecker, pulling himself together time and again, where other men must have succumbed long ago. Marine men will mourn the pass- ing of this veteran of the lakes, not only because of his many sterling qualities, but because of the fact that his place will be hard to fill. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The British Whig Kingston, Ont.
